FLAVOR BEYOND EXPECTATION

Milton grew up in Baja, Mexico, where food was everything. From making tortillas and tamales with his abuela to grabbing tacos on the street with friends, he was immersed in traditional flavors that defined his childhood. Later, he brought this with him to San Diego and Austin, where he worked nearly every job in the restaurant industry. From bussing tables to bartending to cooking, each role shaped his perspective on how a restaurant should be run.

Rachel, a Virginia native, had been vegetarian since her teens and was always drawn to the idea of plant-based living. When Rachel and Milton met, they mutually influenced each other to embark on a journey focused on clean, plant-based eating. The two married, moved to Richmond, and started a family. Over the years, they’ve reimagined authentic Mexican recipes and flavors with vegan proteins.

“We started Taco Vegana because the food we were craving didn’t exist in Richmond. That inspired us to open the city’s first and only completely vegan Mexican cantina in Church Hill.”

OUR STORY

“At the end of the day, it’s about the flavor. Ours comes from traditional processes, sauces, and condiments. What began in our own kitchen slowly grew into a dream; to create a cantina that honors Mexican heritage, brings something fresh to the vegan community, and makes everyone feel welcome. Now, we finally get to share it with you.”

“We believe food can challenge expectations and change minds. Our goal is to prove that vegan food isn't bland or limiting—it's bold, flavorful, and rooted in tradition. For us, purpose also lives in the moments we create. The spark of conversation over salsa, the first sip of a smoky mezcal cocktail, and that irresistible urge for just one more taco.”

Taco Vegana blends Mexican tradition with bold, vegan proteins and craft cocktails, proving that authentic flavor doesn’t need to be compromised to eat vegan. This goes beyond the menu; it’s about protecting the integrity of a cuisine, acknowledging where recipes come from, and spreading kindness to all living things.
